Document Summary

The responsibility of the men of the village. The lords of misrule = boys, apprentices, men. Young men would be carrying cow horns, kettle fish. People dressed as bears and animals, they would make puppets/figures/statutes and carry them along with them. Stage: under the cover of darkness a procession formed. Mascarade: lead by 2 young men with huge cow horns, followed by an individual with a large old fish-kettle around his neck (representing the victim or culprit), trans costumes. The way the sentence was carried out is just as important as the sentence itself. Subtleties will be seen later on aka judges using their discretionary powers. While this all seems repulsive to us, these punishments made sense to the rich and poor, the old and young. People shared the same religious/political frameworks, so they believed in freedom of speech. It was their punishments and they were able to participate in them (last dying word)
