The understanding is that you have god, a community of believers, these believers are the ones who chose who the caliph is after the death of muhammad. God community caliph qadi/wazir/amir (in early islam) Qadi = judge: enforces islamic law, judicial branch. Amir = army: commander of the/an army. Market supervisor: the administrator, right hand man of the caliph, made sure that the institution were run properly & finances were managed. God caliph wazir/qadi/amir/sultan community. Caliph is being designated and its now hereditary (muawiya started it) Imam: descent from prophet, batin knowledge, regardless of whether in political power, never really had any power. Hidden imam: caliphate and worldly politics are irrelevant: nobody can take over this position. Do not rebel anymore, it was tried and it is not useful or successful.
