Punic wars lasted over 100 years 3 major wars. The romans were not content to fight just that, but they fought other wars . War because they both wanted control over sicily. Carthaginians are a naval empire they are very wealthy. Rome needed to build a navy to confront them. Quinquereme battle ships with 5 oars on the side. Polybius describes that the romans captured this battleship and modeled it specifically for carthaginian. Romans crashed directly into carthaginians ships and fought on land. Economic advantage romans fund their navy with private investment. Romans invest heavily in their navy and are able to out buy the carthaginians. The wealthy elite who funds the romans does not get a benefit. Battle of the aegates (march 10, 241 bc) After this battle, the carthaginians were happy to make a truce (it was expensive, long, brutal on men) Roman general (gaius) made a treaty with a representative of carthage.
