19th century: womens work (whether paid or not) contributed to the canadian economy beyond being wives and mothers, women in canada are migrating from farms to cities, central and eastern. Some lived with their employers, some had their own homes: work depended on what the employer wanted; mostly cleaning, sometimes cooking and child care xi. Woke up and was at the house before the employers woke up, starting fires and getting water boiling, still would be working by the time the family went to sleep xii. Made very little money, depending on the home you worked in xv. Most serious issues were abuse (physical, emotional and sexual) xvii. Many domestics become pregnant due to rape and they would be dismissed xviii. Some instances in court records of domestics killing their employers, some saught legal recourse but law didn"t really protect them xix.
