Systematic collection & preservation of documents that were considered valuable and important (worth keeping vs not) Not everything in archives is placed in public area. Restrictions: accession records that archives own (gifted) to them, largely available for public use, deposit belongs to someone but has been given to archives for safe keeping, restricted from public view. Everything is catalogued and archived in todays society (online, (cid:1) searches) Genealogies some cultures more than others. Formal decrees, legislation, documentation of decisions made. Archives nationales first truly national & modern archive (cid:1) Built for a place to hold and preserve government records. Vatican has 70 year rule before documents can be publicized, Archives can be national, provincial, county, city, trans-national. The making of meaning: where to put things so that they fit in, where they would make sense to be found, meaning is dependent on the material the document is placed beside.
