Name given to whatever passage might exist that would let them pass through the continent to the north to get to asia. Russians were also looking for a passage from the other side. This wasn"t really a canadian exploration - at this time canada ended at the shield, everything after that was called rupert"s land and was owned by hbc (took up a vast area) John franklin disappeared in the 1840"s trying to find the passage. All sorts of rescue expeditions were sent even though people knew that he was most likely dead - nobody could track him down though. Robert mcclure coming from the pacific side going eastwards found passage *but he didn"t do it all by ships. Took him three years, ships got stuck in the ice and their rescue came from running into another ship searching for franklin"s downed ship. North west company & hudson"s bay company were competitors.
