Document Summary

Certainly native people were not aware of themselves as culturally one. A rich diversity of cultures existed yet there were some general characteristics we can identify. Could vary considerably from one band to another. Lived in tipis, nuclear family plus a potential few extra family members. Authority vested in males, esp in migratory hunting tribes. Lived in long houses, anywhere from 10-30 families (all same fam tree/clan) Very little privacy, hides hung to separate family groups. Matrilineal system, everyone living in long house was related on the mother"s side. Matriarch of long house had considerable political power. When married, men moved in with women. Very open with sexuality after marriage easy. Homosexuality considered the third gender , cross dressing common, separation. Gender roles very defined but no real distinction that one role is more important than other. Men do hunting etc, women raise children, cook etc, considered equally important jobs though.
