Cold mountain is an intertextual reference to homer"s iliad. Odysseus is talked about as a skilled wood worker. Almost always wears a hat as the main character does. Odysseus tries to make himself look mad by plowing his fields in a vain attempt to grow salt in order to avoid going to war when asked to fight. Main character plows a field, but isn"t trying to feign madness. Inman sheds odyssues" cunning qualities such as lying, slyness, etc. Penelope (odysseus" wife) remains the same in ada"s character. Prior to agamemnon"s departure, a snake was seen to devour multiple birds which symbolized how long and destructive the war would be he was about to wage. In the opening scenes, when we see the silhouette of a horse running away from the siege, this is homeric. During the night raid when inman and others venture out at night in a recognisance mission, odysseus also goes on such a mission.
