Document Summary
Definition and characteristics: a condition to which all human are entitled simply by being human, inalienable. Civil rights: created by humans, assigned by a government (1948) un universal declaration of human rights, canada was actively involved in its creation, aspirational document. Mahabharata: indian text, sets out ways humans should interact. Political codes (bushido, emperor ashoka: military code, ashoka (indian emperor) drafted a code, culturally specific. United nations (1948) universal declaration of human rights: concentration camps, atomic and chemical weapons, people aren"t a civilized as originally thought, decolonization, abuse in colonial areas, does not create these rights, they already exist. Countries cannot be exempt from the document. Supranational: 20th century ideal, human rights law. Criticism: what do democracy, morality, and justice mean, many asian countries wanted more parental authority, communists argued political rights should be limited to prevent the rise of fascism.
