Document Summary

Unit 1: introduction to the course and foundational concepts. World tourism organization (wto) aims to promote tourism development and defines tourism using the idea of activities. Researchers and managers tend to rely on a broad definition of tourism insofar as it allows them to measure the movement of people and to gain a sense of their activities. Another way to delineate tourism activity is to define the traveler a an international tourist, domestic tourist of an excursionist (traveling for the day kind of deal). Its impact is often measured in terms of economic contributions (employment and expenditures, gpd, jobs). Also possible to consider tourism in terms of consuming resources (economic, environmental, social impacts). Still, it is not traditionally an industry and hard to measure product function. Mass tourism (or packaged tourism) can be considered more like an industry, but other types, like ecotourism are much harder to gauge, or understand in these terms.
