Supermarketisation and urban food security in accra, ghana: supermarketisation: the rise of supermarkets. Multidimensional phenomenon: food availability, access to food, utilization. Many factors including gender, pollution, land governance and environmental issues influence food security. There has been a rapid urbanization in sub-saharan africa which has led to an increase in urban poverty and shift in urban diets. Why supermarketisation has happened: cheaper prices, all neighbourhoods, even low income ones, are included which gives more people physical access to food, healthier and higher quality foods, decline of traditional food retailers. Because of supermarkets obesity levels have increased since there is an increased consumption of processed foods.
