Overview: cities and culture in the global south. What is culture: knox and pinch (2010): The values that people hold; overtime our understanding of culture is enriched, a particular way of life is an example of culture. The material objects that people use: gender, class, ethnicity, variations between cultures and race and ethnicity. Cities, culture and the global south: urban expressions of culture: place, shape and landscape shape culture. Culture is an ongoing process of sharing an ongoing needs and process. Presence of religious monuments, buildings, and sacred spaces. Ethnic enclaves; so places where similar groups of people interact such as a china town in a city. ; geographers are interested in how cultural traits different groups come together. As an expression of sovereignty or political power. For preserving collective memory of significant local events; places become important in cities themselves (1 particular place where local things occur) For economic benefit (especially in a context of globalization)
