Document Summary

Unit 6: freshwater, oceans and marine fisheries overview (weeks 8 & 9) Growing concerns about the availability of freshwater and the demands we are placing on it. Freshwater resources are spatially uneven and are subject to many pressures, including past and present mismanagement, population growth, economic development and climate change. Many consequences of declines in freshwater quantity and quality e. g. our ability to generate energy, health of ecosystems and humans and food security. One of the most significant uses of water is agriculture: approximately 71% of global water withdrawals are used to support agriculture. Water is also critical to energy production, both traditional (e. g. use in oil mining) and renewable (e. g. hydro-electricity, biofuels), accounting for ~20% of global water withdrawals. Uses can not only result in water scarcity due to overuse or not having sufficient water for necessary activities, but water quality may also be impacted: e. g. poisoned water video.
