The production and use of science is influenced by power and politics but is taken as objective truth. Science can be used by those in power to promote their own values or positions and is embedded in social norms. This affects how environmental issues are understood and managed; therefore impacting the everyday lives of people around the world. Is not saying that environmental degradation doesn"t exist or matter but is saying the terms we use to describe the real issues are not adequate and don"t capture the complexity of degradation. The purpose of discussing orthodoxies is to improve our understanding of environmental change and our ability to prevent environmental problems: orthodoxies can propose harmful solutions and distract from more important causes such as water shortages in watershed regions. The alternative is to build adaptive practices and local knowledge. Environmental adaptions practices adopted by people to mitigate the environmental impacts of resource scarcity or environmental change on local resources.
