Document Summary

Characteristics of functional resources: resources are dynamic. The value of resources will change over time, which will have an effect on their demand. It was not too many decades ago that virtually everyone in europe and north america heated their homes with wood or coal. Thus those resources have much less value today from that perspective. What we need or what we want changes over time reflecting this dynamism. The increasing value of solar and wind energy may reduce the demand (and thus value) for natural gas and oil: resources may be depleted/ degraded and/or made obsolete. It should be possible for you to think of several resources falling into each of these categories. We can develop technologies that extend the life of some resources. For example, the development of increasingly more fuel-efficient vehicles has the potential to reduce demand for fuels and thus, extend the life of those resources.
