Textbook: chapter 1; chapter 2, p. 33 - 40; chapter 7, p. 186 - 190. There is no doubt that humans are impacting the environment. However, humans are changing the world and the biophysical systems of which it is composed in ways unseen historically. Elementary school children are well aware of the problems with air pollution and soil erosion, extinction of species and so on. We are taught at an early age some of the ways we are imposing our expectations and demands on the environment (and on the remaining life) around us. In this unit, we will introduce the human-environment interaction model, which will act as an important framework for this course. We use this model to enhance understanding of the connections between humans and the environment, which are, basically, linked to our demand for resources. Impact and then turn our attention to the word sustainable or sustainability .
