Urban structure: referring to external shape of a city. Urban morphology: land use patterns of a city. Cities are complex due to history, culture, and politics. Cities can use planning control (location of buildings) 3 models to help understand land use. Urban growth occurs in a series of zones which expand outwards. Socioeconomic status increases as you move away from downtown. Wealth increases as you go from downtown to suburbs. Wealth depends on individuals distance relative to downtown. Dont have many people living in downtown (more of workplace) Zone 3: zone of independent workers" homes. Assumes that land use patterns are based on income levels. Each node will attract similar land uses and repel different land uses. Income level differences are according to location. Cities in western and eastern europe has similarities: have plazas and squares, function as important spaces of activity.
