FRHD 3060 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Population Ageing, Numbers Game, Developing Country
Document Summary
The study of populations over time and place: looking at mortality rates, fertility rates and migration patterns. How do we measure population: the degree to which a population is aged or aging depends upon the measurement used. Percentage aged 65: the most common measure of population aging is the percentage of the population that is aged 65 years and over. A population in which at least 10% of the population is aged 65 years and over is deemed to be old: debate over whether it should just be a numbers game. This way is easy and doesn"t use a huge amount of resources. Median age: the chronological age at which the population divides into equal numbers of younger and older people. 2011 it was 40. 6 (tells us people are living a lot longer) First year the first baby boomer turned 65: a median age between 40-50 suggests population aging.
