An individual"s percepions about: characterisics and abiliies, beliefs and values, relaions with others, connecion to the world. Developed a theory of development across the lifespan. Each stage is a crisis/exploraion: in adolescents the crisis is idenity vs idenity confusion. Establishing a deinite sense of who you are, how you it in the world. Failure to form a stable and secure idenity. Key areas of idenity formaion: love, work, ideology. Idenity formaion starts in ideniicaions during childhood: model selves ater friends, parents and peers. Negaive idenity: idenity seen as most undesirable and unacceptable in society. Classiies adolescents into 4 idenity statuses: achievement. Idenity achievement is ongoing, even 50% those in mid 30s feel like their idenity has not been achieved: university is thought to prolong this process. Criiques focus on independent idenity as a male goal. Idenity and inimacy: for men was something explored ater idenity, for women was a higher priority than idenity, recent studies ind it to be equal.
