Erikson: Industry vs inferiority
• Industry: master something, feel accomplished, productive
• Parents: make children feel competent
Self-Concept
• As children accomplish things, build experiences, develop sense of self-concept
• How to children perceive themselves
o Gender, ethnicity, competencies
• Continue to compare self with others
• School-age so many comparisons
• Scholastic competence: school
• Athletic
• Social acceptance: popular
• Behavioural conduct
• Physical appearance
• Not stable over time
• Different classes, students, transitions
• What do they value/see as important?
Sources of Self Esteem
• Are you happy with yourself?
• Parents
o Affectionate, involved
• Home environment
o Predictable, boundaries, clear rules
Self-Views
• Depending on views of self (independent, interdependent) will affect self-esteem
• Others opinions are more impactful
Consequence of Low Self-Esteem
• Problems with peers
• Prone to psychological disorders
o Depression
• Anti-social behaviour
Relationships with Peers
• Get along better, due to perspective-taking
• Neglected, abused child, decreased perspective-taking
o Voluntary, like each other
o Tend to be alike
