Attempt at self-help-functions: toilet training, child must be ready, be patient, stay dry for 1-2 hours/day, regular movements, gestures, words to indicate need to go , requests to wear underwear , weeks to years! 2 word sentences- quickly to 3-4 words social development. Extrinsic: focus on external actors like praise, rewards. Functional: simple, repetitive muscle movements to explore objects and their properties, banging, pushing, dropping. Constructive: make something like piling sand to make a ramp. Games with rules (not seen with toddlers yet) Mother with friend, child will bid more attention. More likely to play with, initiate, offer toys, and talk to peers > mothers. Ensure play skills, incl. social and emotional, to engage with others. Apprentice: supply materials and space for child to play. Parallel player: play beside child with same materials. Always try to follow the lead of the child. Negative expectation by word or gesture: don"t believe child can do x, self-fulfilling prophecy.
