Inability to ovulate caused by: disease, drug use, alcohol, smoking, extremely under/overweight, age, hormonal imbalance. Teratogens: anything that will affect the unborn or born fetus. Fetal alcohol syndrome (fas: mental retardation, facial deformities, premature births, moderate drinkers (1/2 per day) No physical deficits but cognitive problems: smoking. Stage 1 dilation/effacement/ripening of cervix: latent and active phase, begin with contractions 10cm, 8-14 hours primiparous mothers, 6 hours multiparous mothers, 40-60 seconds, 3-4 minutes. Stage 2 delivery of baby: crowning. Infant passes through cervix: 60-90 seconds, 2-3 minutes. Stage 3 delivery of placenta: birth of placenta (afterbirth, >1 hour after birth, contractions several hours, placenta expelled, uterus closes to prevent bleeding. Comanche & tewa indian tribes: heat on abdomen. Mother"s positio(cid:374) o(cid:374) deli(cid:448)er(cid:455: sitting, back, kneeling. First assessment of infant just after birth. 1 minute and 5 minutes after birth.
