Emergency contraception (ec) taken after unprotected sexual intercourse or when condom breaks. Not an abortion pill cannot end an established pregnancy. Prevents pregnancy by joining of sperm and egg and preventing a fertilized egg from attaching to uterine wall. Most effective when taken within 72 hours. Delivers estrogen and progestin to prevent ovulation and implantation. Patch can be worn on abdomen, buttocks, upper arm or upper torso (not breasts) Contains week worth of hormones gradually released into bloodstream. Worn for 3 weeks 4th week is to allow for period.
