Critical period***: limited time span during which child is biologically prepared to display adaptive pattern of development. Extreme stress can affect brain: learning and memory, emotional processing (regulation, resilience: some kind of adversity that they were able to overcome. Avoidant attachment: associated with aggressiveness, difficulty with intimacy. Anxious/ambivalent attachment: associated with mood disorders. Disorganized/controlling: associated with personality and dissociative disorders. Reactive attachment disorder inadequate caregiving (ex. Disinhibited social engagement disorder child willing to accept strangers who are not attachment figures. Theory of the mind study of one"s ability to understand one"s own or another person"s mental state. Empathy: being able to connect or understand how another person feels. Adolescents shift focus from family to peers. The ability to recognize faces and emotions continues to improve into adulthood. Adolescents are more reactive to emotional faces than adults.
