FRHD 2110 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Hearing Loss, Middle Ear, Etiology
Document Summary
General term, any impairment with any part of transmission system (ear) Restriction in range of frequencies, or distortion, failure to perceive sounds. Hearing loss: deterioration in hearing (hard of hearing) By severity: mild = 25-40 db, moderate = 40-60 db, severe = 60-90 db, profound = 90+ db, decibels: smallest difference in loudness intensity that can be perceived. Zero db is point at which average can hear even faintest sound. By site of loss: conductive: mechanical problem in ear canal or middle ear that blocks the conduction of sound, sensorineural: damage to inner ear, auditory nerve, or auditory nerve pathways. By etiology: congenital: present from birth, adventitious: not present from birth. By age of onset: pre-lingual, post-lingual. 5% of ontarians deaf and have hearing impairments. 4 in 1000 canadian babies are born with some degree of hearing loss or will develop early progressive childhood hearing loss. Significant proportion who are learning english, significant challenge.
