Breaking up face-to-face is seen as the most socially acceptable way to break up with someone. When are couples most likely to break up: social media knows pulled from relationship status updates. Spikes before christmas break - thanksgiving and spring break. Lowest is on christmas day and at the end of summer break. Same region of brain is stimulated in physical pain as is in emotional pain. Social relationships helped us survive as an evolutionary process. Humans would rather physical pain than social exclusion. Depression and anxiety gives perception of physical pain. High levels of social support = lower levels of pain: surround yourself with friends and family. Our brains become addicted to our partner. Breakups stimulate a pain response: thinking of a lost love stimulates activity in brain areas associated with physical pain.
