We are supposed to have one partner that is the one and they should meet all our needs. In this sense of monogamy, it is viewed as the ultimate relational commitment. In the media we see cmn in love triangles they have to choose one partner. In law, marriage is defined as two people. Hetero-normativity: promoting heterosexuality as the norm, preferred sexual orientation. Lacks diverse representation of sexual and romantic experiences. Theories developed based on specific identities and experiences. Studying cmn can challenge assumptions and broaden understanding. Relationships in which partners openly agree to engage in extra dyadic sexual and romantic relationships. Swinging: emotional fidelity extra dyadic sex, often in the same social environment (eg. swing clubs, parties) Attitudes toward cmn: perceived as less moral, trustworthy, responsible, relationships are seen as less stable, satisfying and happy. Common assumptions: jealously is bad and harmful, jealousy is a sign of love, everyone experiences sexual/romantic jealousy.
