Historically - marriage would be next step, but not always in the 21st century. Date someone, go steady with them - get married then live together. Now a preferred form of union, more popular and more socially acceptable. Rise of non-marital cohabitation has been one of the most important trends in the study of the life course of the family. Not synonymous with common law marriage even though they are used interchangeably. Marriage seen as significant life event - gain privilege and status over other forms of union formation. Special recognition to monogamous relationships with marriage. Rules about what you"re suppose to wear etc. Marriage has historically been an institution formed out of economic necessity: Women and men replied upon each other to fulfil particular needs (ex. protection, child care)
