Not synonymous with common law marriage even though they are used interchangeably. Marriage seen as significant life event - gain privilege and status over other forms of union formation. Special recognition to monogamous relationships with marriage. Rules about what you"re suppose to wear etc. Marriage has historically been an institution formed out of economic necessity: Women and men replied upon each other to fulfil particular needs (ex. protection, child care)
