According to statistics canada, family structure refers to the classification of census families into: married couples and common-law (same-sex or opposite) couples, with or without never-married sons or daughters living with them; The diversity of family forms and the language we as a culture have come up with to name these family structures reflect the dynamic nature of our socio- cultural history when it comes to studying the family. It may also reflect the dynamic nature of people"s experience of living in families. However, even with our increased awareness of this diversity, we may, as students of the family, exaggerate the similarities within each structure while minimizing the similarities between structures.
