Week 1: introduction to the science of human development. Science of human development: seeks to understand how and why people of all ages and circumstances change or remain the same over time. Life-span perspective takes into account all of the phases of life: infancy 0-2 years, early childhood 2-6 years, middle childhood 6-11 years, adolescence 11-18 years, emerging adulthood 18-25 years, adulthood 25-65 years, late adulthood 65+ years. Four characteristics of development: multidirectional, how do human characteristics change in every direction to re ect development as multidirectional, always changing as we develop, development happens through critical and sensitive periods. Critical: the type of growth must happen if it is ever going to occur (ex: legs and arms being developed in utero) Microsystem: basic, personal relationships each of us has family, friends, and peers. Exosystems: relationships between individual people and local institutions such as church and school.
