Document Summary
Senescence: gradual physical decline related to aging. It affects everyone and every body part, but the rate of decline is highly variable within and between persons. Starts occurring as soon as growth stops. In some cultures senescence is devalued and has a negative connotation, but aging can be positive. Every period of life is multidirectional has gains and losses. Senescence is often not acknowledged until late adulthood. Typically 30-65 year olds feel 5-(cid:1005)(cid:1004) (cid:455)ears (cid:455)ou(cid:374)ger tha(cid:374) their real age a(cid:374)d thi(cid:374)k (cid:862)old(cid:863) describes people much older than they are. Most adults feel strong, capable, healthy and in their prime. Three aspects of the body functioning protects adults from recognizing senescence: Organ reserve: the extra capacity built into each organ, such as the heart and the lungs, that allows a person to cope with extraordinary demands or to withstand organ strain. Allows normal functioning throughout the adult years.
