Usually regulated according to functional usage in prescribed foods and level of usage. In canada, food additives are regulated under division 16 of the food and drug regulations. The use of food additives is highly regulated and controlled by law. They must be approved for use according to prescribed protocols outlined in food regulations. Most legislation requires that human safety and technological e cacy be demonstrated before additives receive regulatory approval.
