Flight animal: flee situation, may stay and fight if cornered, need space and opportunity for horse to flee. Herd animal: should not live in solitary environment, need to interact w other horses ideally live w other horse, at least chicken, goat. Foraging/ resting behaviour: spend 16hrs grazing, spend 4-6hrs resting: must provide space to lie down and safe mental environment where feel safe enough to lie down or will become sleep deprived. Equine needs: water, food, shelter, companionship, why care about this, welfare of horse, economic impact (cant till the field, produce etc, cant ride and. Stereotypies now compete if not healthy: bored, tell us horse is stressed at particular moment in time, can happen when needs aren"t met, or needs weren"t met in the past and now it"s a habit. Could be good: first develop bc needs weren"t being met, abnormal (past) or coping (now) behaviour.
