ENVS 2270 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Soot, Communication Studies, Hydrosphere
Document Summary
**reminder - carbon footprint assignment is due on feb 8! (before 11:59pm via dropbox) Methane, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide: name something other than the greenhouse effect that could result in a positive radiative forcing (warming, name something that could result in a negative radiative forcing (cooling) Cooling: stratospheric ozone, albedo effect > land use, aerosols (very small particles suspended in the atmosphere) - direct effect, and cloud albedo effect. Anthropogenic portion of the radiative forcing components averages out to a strong warming effect (averages between overall cooling and warming effects of humans) Especially important because it occurs in all living things. Forms of carbon: rocks - limestone - bedrock, gases in the atmosphere - co2 and ch4, organic materials in plants and animals - soil, manure, oceans. Earth"s crust holds the largest amount of carbon followed by the deep oceans and then the fossil fuels reservoirs - others include the soils, plants, and the atmosphere.
