Document Summary

Unit 3: honey bee types, nest and colony cycle. By the end of this unit, you should be able to: compare how different members of a honey bee colony organize their nest and interact to perform different tasks, report on communication in an insect society. There are 3 castes/types of individuals in the colony - queen, worker and drones: queens and workers - females, drones - males, queen. To lay eggs - as she is the only reproductive female. To produce pheromones (chemical messages) that help maintain cohesion in the colony, stimulate food foraging and regulate colony reproduction: drones, male, develop from unfertilized eggs. They have a mother but lack a father. They therefore only carry 1/2 the genetic make-up carried by female bees: the only function of the drones is to mate with virgin queens during the spring and summer, workers.
