Requisites to beekeeping: information, bee hives, bees, a location, equipment, interest and time. Hives: all based on the langstroth hive (1857) which allows 1 cm of bee space. Hive parts: bottom board, brood chamber (with frames and foundation), queen excluder, supers (with frames and foundation), inner cover, outer cover. Protective equipment: veil, gloves, boots and coverall. Bees acquisition: in packages, swarms, hives, nuc hives. Apiary locations: away from animals and humans, with good air circulation and drainage. Away from pesticide applications and with exposure to morning sun. Hive installation: hives placed on stands, behind fences or natural barriers. Uneven placement of hives and use of landmarks and different colors. Urban apiaries: talk to neighbors, provide water sites and prevent swarming. Things to consider: wear protective equipment, avoid strong odours, work on warm, dry, windless and sunny days, avoid jerky movements, do not blockade entrance and prevent robbing. Use wood shavings, pine needles, burlap for fuel.
