ENVS 2210 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Optical Flow, Karl Von Frisch
Document Summary
Recruitment of foragers to food sources: the dance language lec-9. Scout bee finds a food source, fills her honey stomach and/or pollen baskets. Scout bee returns to the hive memorizing landmarks on the way back. Scout bee performs a specialized communication behavior on the vertical comb: a repeated pattern of body movements called dances . Karl von frisch described and interpreted honey bee dances, the most complex system of communication in insects. The round dance, the sickle dance, and the wagtail dance. Language used by scout bees to recruit other bees to food sources. During the straight-line part of the dance, the bee wiggles her abdomen vigorously (wagging movements). Information conveyed: distance, source, quality, quantity and, direction. 1) distance: the more circuits, the shorter the distance to the food source and vice versa. 2) direction: indicated by the angle of the straight (wagging) part of the dance in relation to the position of the sun.
