Methods of removing excess water: surface drainage. Grassed waterways where water naturally collects, water runof in those zones, causes erosion, put in grass to protect soil. Systematically placed surface drainage smaller waterways to direct water to one major concentration: tile drainage. Subsurface pipe lateral drains that connect to a main drain, then into a drainage ditch to a main drain. Low matric potential bc of 10cm diameter the only water that enters is water above ield capacity, water not being held against gravity (doesn"t reduce plant available water) 15m in so, hydraulic conductivity of soil (water b/w tile drains has to travel to get to the drain laterally slow hydraulic conductivity will make it take longer)
