Relational goods have high entry costs (takes time to build friends: can also be displaced by artificial substitutes (watching tv) which are increasing in sophistication and decreasing in price. High social life and high subjective well being seem to be correlated: hard to determine causality though. Working also is a source of socialization though so retirement could bring a reduction in well being. A defining feature of relational goods is that their value crucially depends on the sincerity and genuineness of the people involved. Tv viewing has been found to be negatively correlated with life satisfaction: indirectly reduces the amount of time in relational activities. Individual are prone to misinterpret utility though and over consume goods that satisfy extrinsic needs and under-consumer goods that satisfy intrinsic needs: market can push consumers to non-optimal choices by offering inferior substitutes for(cid:499)joyful goods(cid:499) at low cost.
