Wars at the beginning of the 5th century, forced into kind of an alliance with the hellenes. (490-479 bc) Sparta would have the peloponnesian league, power block. Enriching themselves from their league members: sparta gets worried about this power that athenians have, because it seems like they are taking over without realizing. Thucydides is a writer and records a lot of this history: athenian democracy was built, and they feared the rise of a powerful man who might take over. It depended on no individual from getting too powerful. If their name was written too many times, they were kicked out of the city. It is ironic because as a city, they were too powerful as a city. Sparta sees that athens is growing unbelievably wealthy, with a strong military. They have lots of control of the cycladic islands, and their navy, and their wealth.
