Unix: created by ken thompson and dennis ritchie, and other people, ritchie also created the c language at bell telephone labs. It was developed in 1969 at bell labs, and was based on another os (multics) It was designed to be: the design ideas were: portable, multi-tasking, multi-user, and time sharing. The unix kernel: respond to user events, why was it successful, stable and reliable, powerful ideas, small tools, hierarchical file system, gave free to universities. The c programming language: was initially written to use to write operating systems. Spreadsheet: allowed business to do book keeping, made computers look more useful, why are spreadsheets successful, you can play with it, format was very familiar to bookkeeping pages. A place to store and retrieve huge amounts of information immediately. Before databases, they were stored in filing cabinets, or there were no tracking either: keep track of stuff.
