The government, universiies, individuals each own the internet per se. There are also private companies that own parts of the internet, or at least its structure. Believe it or not the internet is actually managed by a group of non-proit companies. The internet is basically a network of networks. There are a number of large naional and internaional networks that all other internet networks atach to. Data sent over the internet is broken down into packets. These packets are then sent to the recipient based on a random carrying of that informaion. In the middle it touches 9 diferent internet service providers (isp). Each address is a unique ideniier and points to a speciic website. U. s. government funded development of internet technologies. Network access points (naps): points of connecion between isps, designed to move large amounts of data quickly between networks: now private sector companies exchange data via internet exchange points (ixps)
