Document Summary

Carbonyl chemistry is one of the most important areas of organic chemistry. You have been introduced to the chemistry of carboxylic acids in chem*2700, and in this course we will focus on aldehydes and ketones. Hence the compounds that we will study in this chapter will possess a carbonyl group which has either hydrogens or carbons attached to it. The reactivity of aldehydes and ketones is based on two important reactions of them. The fact that oxygen is the 2nd most electronegative element of the periodic table and the fact that in. C=o groups it is bonded via a double bond to one carbon generates a lot of reactivity. 2 lone pairs in sp orbitals the unhybridized p orbitals the bond. We studied in chem 2700 that the carbon was electrophilic and could undergo nucleophilic attack. These can take place in acidic conditions and in these cases the first step of the mechanism is the protonation of the oxygen.
