Document Summary

Life cycle of plants = direct impact on how they use and store energy. 2-year life cycle, during the rst year, they grow vegetatively & store energy in a root, tuber, or other storage organ, then go dormant for winter. Stored energy used in spring to accelerate growth, reproductive structures & seed produced during the second season; the plant dies after this. Vegetative growth: tissues low in calories but rich in many nutrients. Brassica oleraceae: domesticated and selected to produce array of di . crops incl. kale, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cauli ower, cabbage & more. Many crops all come from a single wild relative and are a single species due to power of domestication and selective breeding. Cabbage has been selected to produce one large swollen stem in the centre. Brussel sprouts were selected so that axillary buds develop in the same manner.
