Document Summary

Cuy 2: electrical synapses exist only in certain cells such as smooth muscle and cardiac cells. Electrical synapses directly conduct impulses from cell to cell by linking them lining up connexion proteins in each cell"s membrane. This way ions from one cell can pass directly into the second cell and iniiate the acion potenial. In chemical synapses, impulses are conducted by neurotransmiters since the cells are not linked. The presynapic neuron will release a speciic neurotransmiter, which will have to travel through the synapic clet and land on nearby receptors of the postsynapic neuron. The binding of the neurotransmiter will then iniiate a new acion potenial: the release of neurotransmiters from the presynapic neuron is triggered by acion potenials. Acion potenials will cause voltage-gated ca+2 channels to open, causing an inlux of ca+2 ions. Ca+2 will bind to calmodulin, which once acivated will acivate protein kinase.
