BIOM 3090 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Inhalational Anaesthetic, Isoflurane, Sevoflurane
Document Summary
Premedication are combinations of drugs that are given prior to general anesthesia and they are usually administered intramuscular (im) or intravenous (iv) Anxiolytics: premedications = pre-anaestetics, variety of injectable drugs, hypnotics = induce sleepiness, analgesics = minimize or abolish intra- and post-operation pain, minor diagnostics or surgical procedures in order to reduce the dose of general anestheritc. Then utilized induction agents: produce general anesthesia through iv administration. Goal of induction agents to rapidly render the patient unconscious: wear off rapidly (1-3 minutes) *usually not used b/c of the associated risk longer-lasting agents. A patient passes through various stages or planes of anesthesia during induction: Goal is to get the patient through the excitement phase fast, even before it is observed. Inhalant anesthetics work too slowly and the patient would struggle during the induction phase. Rapidly acting injectable anesthetics are used to induce unconsciousness. 2 agonists: dexmedetomidine, benzodiazepines (diazepam) sedative and analgesic.
