Charles darwin origin of species: published in 1859 after 20 years. Homologous trait similar because of inheritance from a common ancestor. Common descent with modification made sense of puzzling patterns in nature. Because they all had similar bones at similar sections concluded that they were all evolved from a common ancestory homology. Wings of a fruit fly, wings of a bat not inherited from common ancestor independatly derived. Iclicker- whales are closely related to hippopotamus because evolution biologists did dna analysis; also the ancestors of whales had legs, because whales have vestigial legs, also have to surface to breathe. Paleontologists have recently found fossils of intermediate species linking whales to the hippo family. Individuals within a species are variable: some of phenotypic variation among individuals is inherited by the offspring. + disuse (lamarck: couldn"t answer criticism that the initial effects. Mendel"s cross for pea color (1865) darwin didn"t read all of the literature, could"ve used this to prove his theory.
