BIOL 2400 Lecture Notes - Lecture 31: Thomas Robert Malthus, Precambrian, Australopithecus
Document Summary
Section 1. 3 pg 23-28: darwin observed the pattern of evolution in the fossil record, morphology of living species and interpreted the pattern as the result of descent with modification from common ancestors. He noted that there were variations in every generation. Genes interact with the environment during the development of the phenotype: changes to developmental genes can have effect, misconceptions about evolution. In a stable environment they remain relatively constant. Interference 3 - over generations natural selection leads to a gradual change of population and evolution and to the production of new species: homology: traits that are similar because they have been inherited from a common ancestor. If an animal or plant has a trait that benefits its survival/ thrive in its environment, it may leave more offspring behind than other individuals of its species and those offspring are more likely to have that trait.
