Modiicaion of glycoproteins takes place in cisternae of golgi complex. Steps in the glycosylaion of a typical n-linked oligosaccharide in the golgi complex. As the oligosaccharide moves through the cis to trans stacks it gets modiied through the acion of integral membrane proteins whose acive sites face the lumen of the golgi cisternae. Structure: smooth, latered, disk-like cisternae (about 0. 5-1 micron in diameter, about 8 (or fewer) cisternae/stack. Range from a few to several 1000 stacks per cell: curved like a shallow bowl, shows polarity.
