Midterm pick up sessions: friday march 11th, 10am-1pm. The origin of eukaryoic cells: the endosymbiont theory, lynn margulis ~ major proponent. Certain organelles of the eukaryoic cell have evolved from smaller prokaryoic cells that have taken up residence within the cytoplasm of a larger host cell o. Overview of the endo-membrane system: early em work revealed (within the cytoplasm) Extensive network of membranous canals and stacks of sacs (=cisternae, plural of cisternum) Vesicles: the combines surface area of cytoplasmic membranes is many imes greater than the area enclosed by the plasma membrane. o. Dynamic structures: cells uilize several membrane traicking pathways. Consituive: materials transported in secretory vesicles and coninuously discharged into extracellular space. Regulated: materials are stored as membrane-bound packages that are discharged only in response to a speciic simulus. Uptake/recycling: works in an inward direcion. Materials move from outer cell surface to the cytoplasm.
